Quick answer
Most don't. Sunbed lotions are designed for use under sunbed lamps, and most contain no sun protection factor, so they won't protect you from UV on the sunbed or outdoors. Check the product label: many of ours say "does not contain SPF". Outdoors, use a proper sunscreen instead.
Why most sunbed lotions have no SPF
Sunbed lotions are designed to moisturise and, depending on the type, add colour or a tingle. They aren't sunscreens, and most contain no SPF filters at all. Many of the product pages on our site say "does not contain SPF" in the details.
What that means for you
- On a sunbed: the lotion doesn't protect you, so your session time is what matters. Follow the salon's recommended time: see how to avoid burning on a sunbed.
- Outdoors: don't use a sunbed lotion as sun protection. Use a sunscreen. The NHS recommends at least SPF 30 with at least 4-star UVA protection.
Does any lotion make sunbeds safer?
No. Whatever's in the bottle, a sunbed still gives out UV, which carries risks for your skin and eyes. Read are sunbeds safe?
