Sunbed lotions

Can you use outdoor sun cream or tanning oil on a sunbed?

Quick answer

It's best not to. Outdoor tanning oils aren't designed for sunbeds, and many salons don't allow outdoor products because some can damage the sunbed's acrylic surface. Outdoor sun cream also isn't a way to stay on longer: the safest approach is to follow the salon's recommended time and use a lotion made for indoor tanning.

Why indoor and outdoor products are different

Sunbed lotions are made to be used under a sunbed's lamps and on its surfaces. Outdoor products are designed for natural sunlight, often contain oils, and many contain sunscreen filters.

Outdoor tanning oils

Oils aren't designed for sunbeds, and sunbed makers and salons often warn that some outdoor products can damage the acrylic surface you lie on. Many salons ask customers not to use them for that reason.

Outdoor sun cream

Sunscreen is essential outdoors. On a sunbed, though, it's not a way to make a longer session safe. If you need protection to cope with a session, the session is too long. Shorten your time instead: see how to avoid burning on a sunbed.

And the other way round

Sunbed lotions usually contain no SPF, so don't use them outdoors for sun protection. See do sunbed lotions contain SPF?
