Quick answer
Apply it to clean, dry skin shortly before your session, following the instructions on the bottle. Use a thin, even layer, working in sections, and blend well around knees, elbows and ankles. Keep it away from your eyes, wash your hands straight after if it contains a bronzer, and patch test any tingle lotion 24 hours before you first use it.
Before you apply
- Start with clean, dry skin. Take off make-up, perfume and deodorant where you can.
- Exfoliate the day before, not just before your session, for a smoother, more even finish.
- Patch test new tingle or bronzer lotions on your inner arm 24 hours before: see what does a tingle lotion do?
Step by step
- Check the bottle. Instructions vary between lotions, especially on how long before your session to apply.
- Use a small amount at a time. A thin layer is enough. Too much can feel sticky and, with bronzers, look streaky.
- Work in sections: legs, arms, body, then back (ask for help or use a long-handled applicator).
- Blend dry areas lightly: knees, elbows, ankles and hands need less product.
- Wash your hands straight away if the lotion has a bronzer, then wipe over the backs of your hands for an even look.
Areas to take care with
- Keep lotion away from your eyes and lips.
- Use a facial tanning lotion on your face rather than a body tingle: see do you need a separate face lotion?
- Cover tattoos or use a tattoo-friendly lotion.
