Sunbed lotions

Do you need a separate face tanning lotion?

Quick answer

It's a good idea. The skin on your face is thinner and more sensitive than on your body, so strong tingle or bronzer lotions made for the body can irritate it or leave streaks. Facial tanning lotions are lighter and made for that skin. Keep any lotion away from your eyes and lips, and always wear goggles.

Why your face is different

  • Facial skin is thinner and more delicate, so it can react more to strong ingredients.
  • Your face often gets more everyday sun than your body, so it may already have more colour.
  • Skincare like retinoids or exfoliating acids can make facial skin more sensitive to UV: see sunbeds and medication.

What to avoid on your face

  • Body tingle lotions. The warming ingredients can be too strong for facial skin: see what does a tingle lotion do?
  • Heavy bronzers, which can look streaky or patchy on the face.

How to use a facial lotion

  1. Cleanse and remove make-up first.
  2. Apply a thin layer, avoiding your eyes, eyebrows and lips.
  3. Blend out into your hairline and down your neck.
  4. Wear goggles: see do you need goggles on a sunbed?
